A bit about Me and Metal

I’m no metalhead: metal just happens to be my favourite style of music.  Power metal, if we’re going to be specific.  But I also list among my favourite bands electropoppers Erasure, techneologists Kraftwerk, 1980s boyband A-Ha… I’ll listen to anything that’s not full-on rap hiphop, realistically.

I was also a late starter: I realised I quite liked soft rock in my early teens, then discovered the ‘softer’ side of metal in Europe and Bon Jovi.  At University, I finally found my metal side: new friends meant new music, and I suddenly realised how good Iron Maiden were.

A visit to provincial Russia in 2003 and a plethora of cheap CDs later, and I’m a confirmed Russian metal fan.  By the end of 2004 and after a three-month stint in St. Petersburg, I’d discovered power metal and just how much more relevant to my interests it is.

I’m also no musicologist, sociologist or psychologist.  I’m a linguist, in the sense that I like languages, and I would class my interest in this topic as a hobby. An all-consuming, pan-life, holistic hobby, leading me into areas I never thought possible, but a hobby nonetheless. The fact that I might be the English-speaking-world expert on Эпидемия notwithstanding…

It’s not just musical heavy metal either: I’ve got a bit of a penchant for aircraft.  I love airshows and have become a Cold War aircraft fan over the past decade or so.  I support my local ‘serviceable’ Vulcan (currently XH558) and air museum (Newark Air Museum): pop them a visit if you can!

My love for power metal is boosted by my love for fantasy: I really like dragons, and I enjoy roleplaying and the like.  I often wonder how many other Эпидемия fans are roleplayers, avid readers of DragonLance (their main songwriter is a huge fan) or indeed otherwise attracted to their music.

I like to combine art, roleplaying and dragons…

Hopefully that’s given you a good idea of what I’m about.  You can expect in-depth linguistic study, high-end Dungeons & Dragons references and varying degrees of intra-metal discussion, but there won’t be much talk of musical depth, full-on political rants or deep compositional thoughts.
